Real Cyclists
From Wikipedia on John Boyd Dunlop
John Boyd Dunlop, a veterinary doctor, who founded a pneumatic tire company bearing his name, discovered the pneumatic tire in 1887 to make the ride of the tribike he gave his son less jarring. The thought that the solid rubber tire of the tri (or was it a bicycle) could be made less jarring. Taking rubber strips from the operating table mats, he cut these into strips, sewed them and sealed them with rubber cement, inflated the contraption, and made it into a new tire. He patentend it in December 1888. Thereafter the pneumatic tire was used to win car races.
Now the pneumatic tire is widely used in cars, which cost the world nearly $3 trillion a year. Tire making is a big industry.
