Kuwento ng Biyahe ni Senior Rider mula Morong Rizal hanggang Daraga Albay

Wheels of Happiness

3.  At si ako.  Gurang na gusto pang may patunayan na Age is but a number

Day 1  -  Morong hanggang Atimonan
Day 2 -   Atimonan hanggang Naga
Day 3  -   Naga hanggang Cagsawa

isang drone.

Jala, bosoboo at hanggang Pagsanjan,

Sagot niya magsiumla ka ng 10 steps, then  11 steps sa susunod na araw hanggang maka 1 kilometro ka, then 2, then 3, then 4 then 5.
Then join ja ng 5 k   Ganon din sa 10 k.

Nakatakbo ako ng maraming 5 k, 10,, 21 k at 42.195.  Fulll marathon  Mga 5 marahil.

2.  Then nag mountain trekking ako.  Naakyat ko Makulot, Pulag Matutum, Pinatubo   Mt. Apo

3.  Then nag 4x4 ako laro sports ng mayayaman. At nahilig sa mga sasakyan din

So bumili ako ng mountain bike

    1.  Baguio 8 times
    2.  Vigan pinakamalayo sa Norte
    3.   SAn Felipe, walalng swag vehicle
    4.  Real Quezon
    5. Laguna Loop,
    6.  Bosoboso Sierra Madre
    7..  Jariel Peak Infanta
    8   Lucban Quezon
    9. Majayjay Laguna
   10.  Bitukang Manok Atimonan
   11.   Padre Burgos Quezon
   12.  Calauag Quezon

Day 3 Mula Naga hanggang Daraga.

Bukod sa biking, nag free weight exercise ako:   crunch, push up, rubber bands, some
weights.  Hindi mo dapat babyehin katawan at pagtanda.

Kaya ito nag extreme bike ako   400 km.   Beyond imagination ko at lagpas sa limit   Naka 150 out and back ang kung 3 araw kayang2 ito 100+

    1.  Napagpagawa ng mansion bilang bahay
2  May mga SUV at European luxury cars
    3.  Nanguna sa pag aaral
    4.  May naitayong maraming malaking negosyo

Make highway crossings at foodstops and fruit stands safe

Wheels of Happiness

Yesterday, I nearly got stuck dead by a speeding Honda City at a Rizal town, while crossing the highway
walking to eat lunch.    As if I am just a duck or chicken crossing.

First the driver who could have seen me crossing should have slowed down.
Secondly there should be street signs or pedestrian lane across the highway
Thridly I should be aware of such a danger and did no cross if I saw all ready an oncoming traffic.

But many do not stop a pedestrian lane even if before a stop light or intersection.  What happened to
our motorists who just got a vehicle on instalment and act like a king who owns the road in utter disregard of LTO laws

a) THE DRIVER OF A VEHICLE SHALL YIELD THE RIGHT-OF-WAY TO A PEDESTRIAN CROSSING THE ROADWAY WITHIN ANY MARKED CROSSWALK OR WITHIN ANY UNMARKED CROSSWALK AT AN INTERSECTION, EXCEPT AS OTHERWISE PROVIDED IN THIS SECTION

Foodstops destinations: obey the law on Senior Citizen discounts

Wheels of Happiness

A foodstop destination selling exquisite food at exotic prices surprisingly gave only 5% discount on the food without VAT removal.  This is shocking because while we like to see new business flourish we
do not want establishments disregard and disobey the laws of the land

(This post has helped by giving free blog posts.   Seniors must stop patronizing the atrocious practice of such destinations for being unfriendly to seniors and disobedient of the laws)

My daughter requested the owner/admin/cashier to rectify their mistake which they did not.
A BIR or DTI representative may ear in their premises and penalize them generously

It is best to avoid them so that they learn their lesson

Bikers now a political force - one out five households own bikers

Wheels of Happiness

A former senator did not get reelected because he offended several million MC riders who were offended by law he passed regarding additional plates for MC.

But now, the bikers who were given bike lanes and being criticized for such a privilege have been increasing in number   1 out of five households own bikes as per survey of SWS:  The bikers are more numerous than car owners;   there are more bikers than there are MC owners in MM.

Motor vehicle owners MC and autos should be aware of this number as they continue to abuse bike riders

This is the result of the survey:

The survey found that 29 percent of Filipino households (an estimated 7.3 million) were using bicycles — 23 percent owned the bicycles while 6 percent used borrowed bicycles. Bicycles were being used for essential (21 percent) and recreational purposes (18 percent). Nationwide, households that owned bicycles outnumbered the 6 percent of those with cars by a ratio of 4:1.

The popularity of bicycles was even more pronounced in the National Capital Region (NCR), where 32 percent of households owned bicycles compared to the 6 percent that owned cars — a ratio of 5:1. It is noteworthy that bicycles are the most commonly owned vehicle in the NCR (motorcycles, the second most popular vehicle in the region, are owned by 25 percent of households).

Difficulties with spare parts and repair shop help

Wheels of Happiness

We always look forward to good service and solutions from suppliers for bike concerns.  However it is not so...

1.  Buying bolts from a nuts and bolts store

I bought 4 pcs of stud bolts for a small engine cylinder stud bolts.   Upon verification I noted that
the bolts would not bite into the thread of the bolt as it looked small.   When I returned this, the owner
was insisting it was the  right stuff, although:   1.  it looks thinner than the sample   2  I brought a                digital micrometer.  The sample was 4.7 mm diameter, hers was 3.6 mm.   The assistant was saying
that we can not depend on micrometers.  What?

It was good that the owner realizing her mistake simply refunded the amount paid (P36).  The assistant
should be trained to open his mouth for correct information

2.  Patching interior with holes

I brought three interiors with holes that I seem unable to repair at home   Before I decided that the best
move to repair interior was in a vulcanizing shop  The suki repair man was there and the newbie
found out he did not have adapter for Presta valve and suggested that I should bring my adapter
always.  What a large vulcanizing shop does not have money to invest in P30.00 adapter

And suggested that I DIY by buying a repair kit. Which I did.   Ii cost me P50.00 to buy a patch
and glue.   I was able after trial and error to patch up all the holes.

Challenges in maintenance of MTB

Wheels of Happiness

From my experience and reading various posts in soc media there are two challenging issues:    operation of front derailleur and the the disc brakes

1.  Front derailleur -   the difficulty of fd shifting to the largest chain.   I experienced this myself.   Several actions are suggested:

     1.  Check and oil the pivot.  Dirt and astray parts could jam the mechanism
     2.  Check the cables:   the outer and the inner cable.  You can clean and oil the cables.   The dirt and  crud could jam the shifter action
     3.   The limit screw.   The outer limit screw, the hi limit screw could be loosened by 3/4 to 1 turn (or more as the case  may need it)
     4.  The barrel adjuster.    A turn or two can make the fd shift nicely

2.  The disc brake.    That is why the rim brakes (the V brake) are simpler to maintain.   The most common
complain is squealing brake. Or failing brake

      1.  Failing brake could be caused by:
           1.  Worn out pads -  replace when the metal back is almost exposed
           2.   Worn cable -  replace
No more mineral oil -  add
Air in the system -  bleed the brake
     2.  Noisy brake
          1. Caliper not centered.   Center the caliper by sight -  lossen the mounting bolt and and try
               tightening  usual visual sight
          2.  Score in the disc -  try to sand, and or replace
          3.  Glazed brake pads -   clean with detergent, alcohol and/or sand paper

But sometimes these may not work and the noise/squeaal reappear

Try and try until the sound disappear

Wheels of Happiness

Jones Vinenegaard was involved in a crash but retained his more than 2 minutes lead over Pogacar.  However it was not a good day for Visma.   It lost  two riders:   Roglic, Steven Krujswik  Steven hit the pavement hard on his shoulder.

Only 6 riders remain for the team until end of TDF

Happy and satisfied with self (DIY) repairs on MTB

Wheels of Happiness

During the last few days, the MTB, both the SAVA and Twitter had difficulties subject to repair. These were done by myself and the LBS.

1.  The FD of the Sava Ti bike would not switch.
I thought the FD, an XT was toast.   I brought this to the LBS, who sprayed degreaser on the pivot
and reinstalled the cables which prayed.    However this was a short lived solution

This post tried another tack before pursuing a replacement.   I removed the FD from its mount to have a better view of the crud that accumulatetd and the pivot (bearings) of the FD. And saw the culprit  end cable cap jammed the mechanism which I dutifully removed.   Ergo the FD worked again.

2.  Worn out front disc brake pad, new one would not fit

The SAVA bike showed hissing sound whenever this post braked downhill.   And the disc seemed to      be warped as the  brake lever was pressed.  However, upon examination, the brake pad was worn out       and  there was all ready a metal to metal contact.   The other piston was all ready out by about 2 mm      due to  the brake pad wear.

It was good that I had resin pad with fins at hand.  However as I reinstalled, the caliper would not fit
into the disc.   What could be solution.?   Reinstalling the worn out pads, this post pried open the              opening so that the piston would sit flush to the caliper.   That did it.  I was able to reinstall
      the pads without further hitch

 3.  Repairing the flat with very tiny puncture

The Twitter bike rear wheel got a flast.  However, I could not find the site of puncture at the
exterior, and the interior.  The bike has been used by another member of the household.

I installed a new interior.   As soon as this post got home the tire was soft again and then became
      flat again.

How to find the hole.  ?

It took me one whole afternoon to find the puncture.  The culprit was a fine staple wire that protuded
from inside teh interior.  It took a long nose plier to remove the culprit.

The next difficulty was finding the puncture at the interior (I had two punctures).   It was not
visible to ordinary water submerge test.   Reason, the bubbles were tiny and came at out very
slowly.  It was difficutl marking the puncture.   But the will power prevailed.   And eventually
      solved the puncture porblem

Do you believe in Holy Week superstition? One of them is staying put in the house.

Wheels of Happiness

Rizal Philippines 4.14.2022

Do not go out during Holy Week.  Jesus Christ is dead, and the devils and bad spirit roam the street.  JC will not available to save you.

I did not believe this.  As a matter of fact when I was working in Pharma, our workmates go to Pampanga and Bataan to visit friends.   We saw several expressway accidents and rescued some of the victims.

This was so until I crashed at Shang when having a rendezvous with daughter after a long ride to Baguio during Holy Week.  We rode Thursday up to Pangasinan, Baguio Climb on Good Friday and return to Manila Saturday.   One of our companions died in a traffic accident on Christmas day while returning from a Christmas drinking party.

This post recalled that when he was 10 years old he accidentally cut himself  very deeply (the bone came out) while fabricating a toy gun.  The bolo used was very sharp, it slipped and cut his right forefinger

Because of the Shang accident, this post did not ride anymore on Holy Week and just stayed at home

No Bisikleta Iglesia for JB still today - still nursing an injury

Wheels of Happiness

Recyclists Bisikleta Iglesia 2015

Fellow kapadyak Vhen Apran invited me to join him in Motorbisita Iglesia - ie we ride in tandem as we relive the Biskileta Iglesia.  I declined as I am still nursing a broken shoulder

Traditionally the Angono Recyclists hold a Bisikleta Iglesia for almost a decade.  The church visit is complete with misallete and prayers especially for Recyclists

We did not have for the last two years because of the pandemic

The churches we visited are:

1.  St Magdalene in Pililla (sometimes the Bugarin or Quisao Church  St. Vicente Alcala
2.  St. Ildefonso in Tanay
3.  St. Joseph in Baras.
4.  St. Jerome in Morong
5.  Holy Rosary in Cardona
6.  Sta Ursula in Binagonan or Sacred Heart in Tayuman
7.  St. Clement in Angono Rizal

True to our religion we join the Christendom in commemorating the Passion of Jesus Christ

UP win vs La Salle and massive route of UST by NU - level of play at UAAP has gone up

Wheels of Happiness

In the absence of any biking activity due to fractured shoulder, this post has no choice but to watch TV the whole day. and nothing is more interesting than the  UAAP basketball game  I watched the close fight in the morning between La Salle and UP.  La Salle.  La Salle lead most of the way but UP came back and edged La Salle.  UP had 2 points spread which it protected in the dying minutes.  You cant but admire the grit and determination of the UP squad which was catching up only earlier in the game.Zav Lucero was UP's hero.  UP had spectacular treys lay ups  and even dunks in the last quarter.   It was surprising for the audience and even to La Salle

It was different in the afternoon in the match between NU and UST.  It was a rout a massacre of UST 82 -51.  NU which gave scare to Ateneo too (unbeaten) methodically widened its lead through lay ups, brilliant play and even a trey.

It is going to be an exciting season

DQ for riders at Ronda hanging unto team vehicles?

Wheels of Happiness

This post saw several vids of several Ronda riders who clung to team or other vehicles while traversing mounting passes.  Some reacted for other netizens posting such video saying he experienced this and that and that the netizen had no right in posting the video.

Well he can say that again. I  saw a post and reposted  and asked several questions:

1.  Is it fake news.
2.  What are the Ronda rules?  Is this allowed?
3.   If it is not allowed and common sense dictates that this is illegal unsportsmanlike, and bad examples
      THEN THEY SHOULD BE DISQUALIFIED.

The riders are not juvenile nor are they short of IQ not to understand honesty, and sportsmanship.  We all ride and watch who is gong to be the best and strongest, not cheaters.  We hate cheaters  in govt, we also hate them at sporting events.

Cheats had a heyday hanging on to a car and a van in Thursday’s eighth stage from Tarlac City to this tourist destination but their shenanigan method was caught on video and now, Excellent Noodles’ Mervin Corpuz, Team Quezon rider Jigo Mendoza and coach Melvin Aricayos and Eagle Cement cyclist Ed Robert Manucot won’t be racing anymore.

In foreign races, sticky fingers when handing out water bottles and even drafting are frowned upon and penalized by race officials.   And this.....

Chief of a food manufacturing giant tweets bike lanes cause traffic at EDSA

Wheels of Happiness

Ramon Ang: Ang problema lamang sa EDSA, traffic is because of the bicycle lane. In other countries, bicycle lane is on the sidewalk. Tayo ginawa natin sa gitna ng highway |
@stanleygajete
All ready this tweet is taking flak mostly from the biking world because as we all know traffic was in Edsa long before the bike lanes (which were introduced only in pandemic) There are other causes which know as too large volume of vehicles, undisciplined behavior at the road, illegal parking at some areas to mention many more
The good sir may have spoken out of turn or brash conclusion. We all know that this true but not entirely true. Other factors play a part.
This post used to teach at grad school critical thinking. One subject was systemic thinking:
1. The causes of problem is systematic - ie no singular cause of problems. There are multiple causes of problem.
2. The causes are not simplistic or linear;
3. Thus Peter Senges teaching that in strategic thinking we need to address the five items in each of the employees,: shared vision, ,shared learning, mindset, personal improvement, systemic thinkig

Two young riders perish at MoA while resting at the sidewalk, a drunk driver without license caused the accident

Wheels of Happiness

Two cyclists were killed when a van ran over them at MoA while the two were resting at sidewalk.   One  died on the spot while the other was rushed to the hospsital but eventually  died.

The offender was a Toyota Hiace driven by a teen ager who had no license and looked drunk.  It was alleged that just like other automatics, the driver stepped on the accelerator instead of the  brake while executing a U turn.

Needless accident.   While you try to be careful, others are not.

Condolence to the family of the deceased.  Prayers and may both of them be blessed so much by the Lord.  and rise safe in heaven

Painful accident for Xian de la Cruz of Nueva Ecija at stage 2 of Ronda in Bicol

Wheels of Happiness

It is not happiness but pain, thus experienced Xian de la Cruz of the Nueva Ecija team in the 2nd stage, team trial of Ronda 2022.   It may mark the  end of the cycling career of said rider who quit school just to train for the Ronda.  So far, the hospital bill is at P300K so far and the  Ronda organizer will  put up 50% or P150K, with the other half being charged to the jeepney driver whose jeep collided with the rider (the rider flew high up  in the air as seen in the video.

The question now is who is at fault:?  The local news said the cyclists were travelling fast (it is a time trial and maybe the locals do not understand the event, and that it si the riders who counterflowed (correct)

While the project manager of the  event, a lady has all ready made statements that this is an accident that is common on all sports, the organizer has spared no effort to make this safe.

Clearly there was no marshall;  the ronda probably lacked marshall  and should have made the public road safe for the time trial  It was not safe.

This echoes the observation of the father of Xian.   It can be avoided and painful accidents like this can be avoided if not prevented.

Bulletproof coffee advised by our family doctor for weight reduction and lower BS

Wheels of Happiness

Because my blood sugar was quite high 11.00 despite vaunted advantages of biking to control BS, the good MD suggested bulletproof coffee which goes hand in hand with Interment Fasting, Keto Diet and One Meal a Day dieting practices.

The bulletproof coffee main differentiation is the use of dark chocolate, MCT (coconut oil) and or olive oil to induce fullness so that the drinker does not get hunger pangs.   I have tried this twice and seems to work well.  However I had LBM for my first cup.

I would adopt this.   for healthy living

Crashing at Recyclist Long Ride last February 25 2022

Wheels of Happiness

It was indeed unfortunate that this post crashed in Pagbilao near Lucena city after completing the sojourn to Bitukang Manok. The bike steering suddenly wobbled while avoiding a pothole and it went out of control and lay sprawled on the road.   It was good Tito was there and assisted me.

It was the baddest crash because aside from being painful:   I had two large road rash at the left elbow and left hips plus a very painful shoulder.    The helmet showed some scratches (I did not realize they could not be used anymore)

I was not able to complete the 145 kms or so riding home via San Pablo City.

1,  This post consulted the family doctor last Monday, however the diagnostic test including the x ray was to be only done on Wednesday (no sense of emergency because I was ambulatory.  I did dress my rashes though

2.  The Wednesday diagnostic which cost a lot did not go smoothly because I did not bring my SC card, I had to walk back for it;  the wounds were dressed at the MHO c/o wifes relatives.  The nuse turned out to be a relative also.  I was worried because as of Wednesday, the wounds were still fresh.  The nurse thought that my BS was high

3.  The nurse advised me to buy Supra tulle But got only Para tulle.   She dressed my wounds with this stuff Friday   The pain in the  the wounds seemed to disappear  and the pus seemed to be less.  She said the next dressing would be by Monday.

4. This post got the results:   CBC and x  ray only by Friday.   For CBC, my BS was 11+  and my triglycerides were high.  I had a incomplete fracture at the shoulder and I was referred to the orthopedic surgeon.  However my mobility was OK and pain was not so much.  The orthopedic surgeon was not available that afternoon and would be seen next Thursday.   All I know too was my shoulder was to be immobilized by sling or bandage.

I hope to be fine soon and I am thinking hard on the continuance of my biking

I met VM this morning when I was walking towards Watson to buy wound dressing stuff.  who asked how was I.  I said I was all ready ambulant,  Much of the pain was gone.  He however told me of the sorry state of Met helmet  (which he gave me)   The Met Mips probably saved me from many more serious injuries.  (which we see in many posts where the victim ask for assistance because of serious wounds

This is not frightenother riders.  But to warn others to be aware that accidents do happen and it could be painful.

Recyclist Long Ride to eme (Bitukang Manok) last February 25, 2022

Wheels of Happiness

This post joined the February 25 -26 2022 long ride of Recyclists.   It was well participated with 30 + joining the ride.   The group left Angono at 5:25.  While it was initially planned that there would be three groups, no one dared do that.   Most of the joiners were strong riders and trained hard since January  (except for a couple)

The first stop was in Pililla at the Euluch lomihan. This was about 7:00 am.    They served the lomi rather late because they were overwhelmed.     We left the Lomihan at about 7:30 and were in Bugarin by  8:00.   Was able to get close to some of the fast riders including VM

Next stop was at Pakil at Manay's and we simply feasted on the eggs, bananas and softdrinks brought by Bernie T at Defender.  Next stop was at Pagsanjan, where we had photo ops and more eggs and bananas.   We were at Luisiana by  12;00 but lunch stop was at Lucban.   We ate at the diversion.  This post caught with some of the riders at Cavinti. and Lusiana.  Some had to resort to Defender ride because of cramps.

We were at Pagbilao by 3:00 and at Atimonan by 4:00 pm.  Returned to Lucena by 4:30 and was at Lucena by 5:30 However this post crashed in Pagbilao and the wounds were promptly dressed by the Hotel staff at Doorz and by Bernie.   I had two major rashes at the left elbow and hips.  And aching left shoulder.

The following day, the riders (me no longer included because I was disabled by the crash) left at 6:00 am after prayers.  We had breakfast at 7:00 am at Ranch resto along the diversion road.   Going up to Sariaya the troop coasted at about 30+ kph.  We were two casualty at the Defender because somebody else had cramps

At San Pablo they turned right and passed via San Pablo Calauan road which was steep.  It rained at thet time until the troop reached Calamba

We had lunch at Calamba by 12:00 We lunched  at MacDonald.     We were at C6 by 2:30 and home by 4:00  So since I was injured I requested that I be delivered home first.

I by not necessarily technically the best for MTB

Wheels of Happiness

I just watched a video on 1by vs 3by and it was the conclusion that the 1by was merely a marketing ploy for old MTB to buy new bikes or accessories for 1 by:   Here are the cons vs the  1by:

1.   Loss of range for the lowest gear and highest gear.  You run our of gear at 1 by;
2.   The chain line;     chain drops because of cross  chain  It is better to have 2by or 3by for better chain alignment.  The fd also prevents chain drops.
3.   More wear and tear for 1 by especially for the chain rin;     it is better if you drop the chain in difficult portion rather than shifting your cogs;
4.  The 7 speed of 3 by lasts longer than thinner cogs and chain  of  1 by   and therefore is less sturdy

Saw many times that MC and even cars overtake from the right; is it legal?

Wheels of Happiness

Is overtaking from the right legal?  I have seen so many times that motorcycles and even cars overtake from the right. In a long ride this weekend, I called out several mtb riders who overtook from the  right, one cut me as soon as he overtook me, and saw at least two dozen MC who overtook from the right, two vans and one car overtook from the right.

To settle once and for all the issue, the post referred to the net.

Here is what Section 39 of the LTO law RA 4136 says

Section 39. Overtaking a vehicle. - The driver of any motor vehicle overtaking another vehicle proceeding in the same direction shall pass at a safe distance to the left thereof, and shall not again drive to the right side of the highway until safety clear of such overtaken vehicle except that on a highway, within a business or residential district, having two or more lanes for the movement of traffic in one direction, the driver of a vehicle may overtake and pass another vehicle on the right. Nothing in this section shall be construed to prohibit a driver overtaking and passing, upon the right, another vehicle which is making or about to make a left turn.

The post mentions of a bus running over an mc that overtook from the right.  It is the blind spot of the  bus.

Shall we be legal or shall we be safe?
