Big chain rings at Giro Italia; the rest of bikedom returns to big chainrings?

Wheels of Happiness

Giro Italia has seen many top riders:   Pogacar, Ganna etc riding bikes with with 54 to 60 teeth and using the same for mountain/hill sections.  Even at Queen stages

I used to ride bike with 53 - 39 which I discarded for 50 -34 compact chain rings.   I could hardly pedal with 50 x 11.  And now these riders.

I see a group of riders riding DOMSA uphill using 54 chain rings with say 30 to 34 cogs.

Are riders getting stronger?  What has happened to world class riders.?

Are we rest of the riders following suit

Two young riders perish at MoA while resting at the sidewalk, a drunk driver without license caused the accident

Wheels of Happiness

Two cyclists were killed when a van ran over them at MoA while the two were resting at sidewalk.   One  died on the spot while the other was rushed to the hospsital but eventually  died.

The offender was a Toyota Hiace driven by a teen ager who had no license and looked drunk.  It was alleged that just like other automatics, the driver stepped on the accelerator instead of the  brake while executing a U turn.

Needless accident.   While you try to be careful, others are not.

Condolence to the family of the deceased.  Prayers and may both of them be blessed so much by the Lord.  and rise safe in heaven

Recyclists attendance at Simples Lugawan is high; all are active and riding.; Ride, GO GO GO

Wheels of Happiness

Some younger cyclists have remarked that Recyclists are gone and disbanded.    No group lasts forever.  I said maybe because about 3 have died:  Papa Rick, Ed 7 days, and lately Bigote Machete.

Also many did not ride because of the pandemic prohibitions.  May be not this time

But maybe some of the leaders are not showing up and the only long ride that was achieved was the reverse the  Laguna ride where I suffered.   Maybe because I lacked the training.  Not this time.

I should follow the examples of Insan Smith Unidad whose mileage and destinations are unbelievable.

This is wake up call for other Recyclists who do not ride so often, nor do not join the group ride.

Recyclists GO GO GO GO

Fatal vehicular accidents/images that remind us to be careful and that biking can be dangerous and to support legislation for bike safety law

Wheels of Happiness

Rizal Philippines
February 21, 2016

We are haunted and disturbed by some news published at FB and RBP about several vehicular accidents:

1.   A rider was bumped by speeding vehicle at EDSA Shaw at the underpass and he had twisted knee and legs;  he survived though.

2. An accident in Sucat where a rider and his bike were pinned by a closed van vehicle.  RIP daw.

3.  And recently in Angono, at Mahabang Parang, a newbie rider surnamed Arambulo from Baytown was walking up his bike at steep portion of Mahabang Parang.  He was bumped by a speeding Meralco subcontractor (they come from Angono)  He was rushed to Rodriguez Medical Center in Marikina city.  He died as he suffered massive trauma/hemorrhage at the liver heart and other parts of the body. He, according to the mds had no chance of survival

MY CONDOLENCES TO Arambulo FAMILY.

Diyan pa naman ako madalas magpractice ng hill climb.!!!

And then we read that the motorists are critical of the "road sharing" with MV.  A motorist asks if we pay the road user tax. No we dont.  So what is the quarrel about sharing the road.  They are the king of the road.  So they wont share this with pedestrian?  Ayon kaya ni aywa tumigil sa pedestrian lane

Please support  the Bicycle act of 2011 which promotes safety  of bicycle rider passed by fmr Senator Manuel Villar (still a bill)

Support moves/legislation that promote Biker's Safety  Baka naman marami ang bikers mag signature campaign tayo. or sumali sa signature campaign

My bike ride this week

Wheels of Happiness

Rizal   March 7, 2015

Last March 5, 2015, I biked to Antipolo Church.  I met Jose there who said it was his first time to bike.  Ever since there was a new mayor in Cainta, he was not so free to bike and arrive late work.   That is good discipline.

Sir VM arrived with the 2014 uniform and the Dogma bike.  We talked for a while and then I had to leave to report at 8:30 for work.

Today, March 7, 2015,  I biked to Malaya.  It is Saturday, and we have work, but I lacked the mileage.  I did not stop at Pisong Kape nor at Pisong Kape, having taken my breakfast at Wawa.

These argonauts pushed us to our limits

Wheels of Happiness

Angono, Rizal Philippines   |  October 20, 2014

They say that after I took their picture, they are marked men.  Hahaha.  That is a sign of admiration sirs....

These very young riders caught up with us in Darangan Binangonan Rizal while we were spinning towards Morong.  I tried to give a chase, which was a mistake.  The swarm, the peloton caught up with me at Convention Center and I was left behind.

They say they are from Taytay, they are their 20s (1/3 my age) and their bikes are all Argon. (Hence the title of this post is Argonauts.)

However I caught up with VM, Luis and Val at Morong Rizal... Trying to catch up with strong riders raises our lactate levels, limits of our speed and endurance.

Ang kabataan ang pag asa ng bayan"

According to them their Argon bikes are cheap

What are the average, top speed of LBC 2014 rider?

Wheels of Happiness

Christie, from NZ, wins a stage;  the winningest Ronda rider as of today

Rizal Philippines  |  February 12, 2014

What is the average speed of Ronda 2014 riders? According to the stage 6 video, the peloton was doing 47 kph, the breakaway was doing 55 kph(the TDF standard?) At sprint, the may be doing more than 60 (65)

I know Recyclists do more than 40. I can only at most for short burst do 35. But not 40. The Halimaw at Recyclists can do 40+ for long distances. Maybe a couple of years more we can do Ronda speeds?

I guess the competition with foreign riders has stretched the limits of Filipino riders. Before they could hardly keep up but now we are keeping on our own. We should be thankful to LBC for giving Filipino riders giving international exposure right at our own turf.

VM reported that at the mountains near Ternate, the foreign riders were seen climbing the hills at 30+ kph. (We could hardly manage 10 kph when we rode to Ternate hills)

JC bikes to recuperate from severe Motorcycle injuries he had in 2004

Wheels of Happiness

Pililla, Philippines | December 8, 2013

JC gets better and stronger with biking; severe injuries form MC accident

Today is the Feast of Immaculate Concepcion

I met JC and Lay, bikers from Binangonan at OL 4 km from  Bugarin as I was doing  recovery ride today. I left the troop at Pisong Kape.

They say, JC walks as if he had a stroke because of severe motorcycle injuries he had in a motorcycle accident in 2004 at Balag sa kamatsile near the municipal building of Binangonan.  He was going home, he had somebody in tandem, and must have hooked into something while doing 100kph.  His companion jumped, had  broken back but he recovered.  He had cracked skull, broke arm and many more indescribable injuries.  He and his motorcycle slid underneath a parked truck. People thought he was going to die.  He was comatose for a week; and his parents spent over a million  in a hospital he named The Medical Money.

He said he accepted whatever the Lord hath given him.   He is biking and he is recuperating getting better with biking.   Yes that is right. I told him.  I had an accident too.  The Lord does not give you anything bad.  They are something to make you better.

All we can say is:  cyclists:  motor and bike.  Ride safe always.  Ride conservatively if you are in crowded, hazard strewn area like school (where he crashed) and C6 (for Richard)

We must be safety conscious all the time

Mag ingat, take care and God bless all bikers

                                         Lay and JC at OL

                                   Lay

We pray to Jesus Christ our Lord to keep us safe always

A Holy Gardens jersey for Angono, Taytay and Cainta riders?

Real Cyclists

Maybancal, Morong Rizal  PHL June 16, 2013

I saw some Taytay riders wearing  CME uniform.  I asked if CME shouldered the cost.  They said they bore the entire cost.

I talked to Boyeth who happens to know Jun Vic.  I said maybe we can share cost with other Holy Gardens, to have Holy Gardens for the 3 group of riders:  Angono, Taytay, and Cainta (and maybe Cainta)

I said I hesitated having this kind of sponsorship

Maybe for 2014?

Holy Gardens on a bike a jersey, is that OK

As we waited for other riders from Bugarin, and as we took refreshments, we stopped again at Simples Lugawan, we encountered other riders and they are from Las Pinas.  They would go up to Tanay church.  We had some photo ops.

I met two guys today:   Mr. Papay Aguinaldo from Daang Hari (I told him we are often passing through Daang Hari as we ride to Tagaytay. He said his group has tent behind a gasoline station there -  Petron? and said he was glad to meet me)  And then Mr. Philip Martinez.  He is from Santolan and is 76 years old.  He has a BMX with him and he said he all ready rode around Binangonan, Cardona and Morong this morning   He said his son conducts the race at Santolan.
