Fast and furious hard anaerobic rides
Wheels of Happiness
Rizal Philippines
January 22, 2017
For the past 3 days, I do not have a decent long ride. But yesterday and this morning I did fast and furious hard anaerobic rides. I am tired and spent from this ride and I have to sleep early.
Yesterday I raced with the jeep using an MTB I must be doing 30 to 32 kph which is fast for MTB. An indicator that I was fast was that a jeep whom I overtook and observed arrived some 4 minutes later.
I also overtook a car
This morning we had PE at Taytay MEG. The ladies hired bikes and we went around the technopark (where there are races) We did 2 loops. On the way back our staff rode on the jeep which I led until Valera. After Valera and up to Angono, I did not see the jeep again.
Hard rides like this I think develop speed and strength.. They also leave you very hungry and tired and in need of deep sleep always

Light bike or lighter biker affect climbing?
Wheels of Happiness
Rizal Philippines
December 24, 2015
Merry Christmas tomorrow.
The video that you are about to watch explains why we need to: 1. lighten our bike (buy a bike whose parts: wheel sets, frame, tires, BB, fork, headset must be light. 2. why we should exercise some more, diet etc. to lose weight. We spend about $2/gram that we say (about $2,000 for every kg. That is lot. It should be easier and cheaper to lose weight of the engine (the biker)
VM Jun Vic mentions this findings very often. This justifies why he opts for lighter bikes and wheel sets/tires always
There was an experiment conducted. One bike was used and rode up 8% gradient, for a minute and the power was measured. Two rides were made: the basic bike (about 16 lbs) and for the second ride, 2.6 kg water bottle was added. Two rides were made: one at 8 kph, and second at 16 kph The second rider who was bulkier repeated the ride.
What were the findings?
1. For the first rider, riding at 8 kph and 16 kph, doubling the speed added output of about 40 watts. The heavier bike (or the water bottles) increased the power output by 9 watts. That is huge
2. For the second rider who was heavier results were the same for the heavier and lighter bike. However, his heavier mass caused an increase of 40 watts. Hence, if you are overweight, or not lean, you tend to tire out faster because you have to have higher output.
3. We should rid our bikes of unnecessary weight and excess baggage. You now know why TDF riders dispose of most of their water bottles prior to a climb. For TT riders, the advice is not to bring tools or spares or even a water bottle. That is to conserve energy
Advice
1. Work on the engine, reduce body weight by eating healthy foods, going to the gym, cross exercise, push ups, crunches or doing cross exercises: swimming, jogging etc
2. Lighten your bike. But lighter interior, wheelsets, chain, pedals, shoes. On a slow staggered basis. Unti unti. EVERYDAY WE MUST IMPROVE

Fast cadence riding and use of cadence counter
Wheels of Happiness
Angono, Rizal Philippines
August 18, 2015
When we were riding to Luisiana, Ed "Ido" told me as we were going up Kalayaan that he favors fast cadence riding. ie that the most economical ride pedalling rate is between 90 and 100 rpm. It is possible to know that if you have cyclometer with cadence counter.
For him, with a 12 to 34 cogs, this means having his gears at 53 x 26. (For about 51 gear inches). Will he be left behind by guys using say 53 x 14. He said that the pedaling rate will eventually catch up with speed. This is the training for champs
I tried using this technique and by the time we were at Luisiana, it was game over for me. I have to get used to this technique
Ed texted me further that his training rides are either to Bugarin or Sierra Madre 6 to 10. No rests in between. He usually rides up with 53 x 26 and stands up for say up to 10 km. With his lean body, and strong leg muscles, he can do that. And that he is a Valdez, the family of great riders/bikers

GAA Recylists soloed to Tagaytay City last Sunday and they were quick/fast
Wheels of Happiness
Rizal Philippines November 5, 2014
Gerry informed me last night that 3 of them (and I should have been part of the group) biked to Tagaytay City last Sunday. They were him Gerry, Angel, and Alan (thus GAA)
They were at GMA cor Dasma (near Greenwoods) by 7 am (they left at 6 am) because they did not stop and were at Tagaytay City at a little over 9 am. Then they biked to Silang where Alan went to the place where his mother is interred. And they stayed there until 10.
They were home by 1 pm. Boy they were fast.
They did not invite me to bike with them, knowing that I and like VM involved in memorial business, would be very busy.
Next time GAA. It would be JAAG next time. We were together before in several Tagaytay rides (about 5) and we called our selves. REAL MEN.

These argonauts pushed us to our limits
Wheels of Happiness
Angono, Rizal Philippines | October 20, 2014
They say that after I took their picture, they are marked men. Hahaha. That is a sign of admiration sirs....
These very young riders caught up with us in Darangan Binangonan Rizal while we were spinning towards Morong. I tried to give a chase, which was a mistake. The swarm, the peloton caught up with me at Convention Center and I was left behind.
They say they are from Taytay, they are their 20s (1/3 my age) and their bikes are all Argon. (Hence the title of this post is Argonauts.)
However I caught up with VM, Luis and Val at Morong Rizal... Trying to catch up with strong riders raises our lactate levels, limits of our speed and endurance.
Ang kabataan ang pag asa ng bayan"
According to them their Argon bikes are cheap
