This post installed a 42t cog to the MTB. (from 36th) So thats 6 additional teeth and the RD looks a little bit stretched and ready to break. So I decided to add 4 links from extra chain length I hid when I changed my chains. I thought of having the bike shop install this, not quite trusting my chain installation skills. But later during the day, I decided I could do this. I hope the chain would not break come hill climb time.
A senior thinks, rides, solves problems, repairs bikes, thinks discusses about other sports. What senior should do to keep fit

My ride today on Sava Ti MTB to Medalva Hills
Wheels of Happiness
Rizal Philippines
December 2, 2017
The PE of our office mates took us to Medalva Hills at Botong Francisco Highway. It is a challenging uphill climb. However I had my SAVA Ti bike 3 x 10 XT group set. There were 3 sections of climb: one after highway, next is the 500 meter long climb to the crest, and another two steep climb at the subdivision
I had to use 32 x 36 gears to make it easy on myself...
I have my usual 3x ride for the week: one on November 30, one yesterday and one today. Ti to Morong on November 30 Sava carbon yesterday to Mahabang Parang, and today's ride.

Climbing Botong Francisco (Medalva) yesterday together with office mates
Wheels of Happiness
Rizal Philippines
July 23, 2017
Our PE yesterday was jogging to Medalva (Botong Francisco highway) I took the opportunity to test the Sava Ti bike with XT group set, WTB wheel set and Manitou fork. I did 3 x ride up the hill. I used 32 chain ring and max of only 36 for the steepest part. For the hill, I used 32 x 32 and it was easy riding. I did not have to catch my breath, nor be in distress.
I rode it 1x before the ladies climbed; then I climbed it again as they were walking at the climb; Then as they were descending, I descended and climbed again the hill (that is the 3x time)
The weight and the gears of Sava Ti were perfect for the hill climb. There were others whom I saw negotiating on an MTB with platito gears (24 chain ring) walking. The others used 24 chain ring for the climb.

Climbing the Church in the Sky at De la Cuesta in Muzon Taytay Rizal, again
Wheels of Happiness
Rizal Philippines
July 15, 2017
Our staff decided to have the PE for Saturday (physical fitness) today at Church in the Sky, at de la Cuesta, Muzon Taytay Rizal. Since I arrived early, I tried to climb the church early. It is always a challenging task to go to the church. There is the last portion, only 30 meters long, that is steep. The longer portion about 400 meters is long and medium steep. But the last 30 meters can take your breath away; the 68 year old man, a former biker himself, says he can ride that portion up.
Well I rode down to see other colleagues and climbed the hill again. My gear was 32 x 28. for the second climb. For the first climb it was 32 x 36.
The ride this morning was probably 3 km from Angono x 2, 6 and total up and down the church was 4 km. I sweated a lot from this climb and must have burned plenty of cholesterol, uric acid, and blood sugar

Lack of practice makes the knees and thighs weaker?
Wheels of Happiness
Rizal Philippines
March 12, 2017
Last Thursday, I went up with a group of trainees (two ladies) up East Ridge. We walked from Manila East (7 11) till Unamonte where we did the calisthenics. Then I let them walk, as tried to climb up using the SAVA carbon fiber MTB. I seemed to lose lung capacity easily and the pedaling seemed tough. I have to stop some 20 meters away from Unamonte gate 2. We rested there and I rode again. Again the pedaling seemed tough and I had to put the chain ring down to 24. I usually do not stop and use only 32 to get up to the top.
What seemed to be wrong? Well lack of practice. I did not do a lot of East ridge or San Carlos or Medalva climbs. I guess I have to do more of that. I neglected hill climbs
Although today I rode to Antipolo Church using a roadie, I think I did well and managed the fiber tex and Beverly portion well. (As a matter of fact I passed many MTB who seemed to relish on frequent stop) On the way home I passed the diversion. Pero sagad ang sprocket sa 32 (x 39)

Interval training today using a Road Bike
Wheels of Happiness
Rizal Philippines
July 14, 2016
I biked today to Morong using a road bike, the Bianchi up to Morong. I did at least 8 interval. Sprints of at least 15 to 20 seconds, some of them going uphill.
I did not stop at Morong (until Emmas Resto only) and continued going home. I passed at Cardona diversion. I used initially 39 x 28 but since I was recovering from Tagaytay City long ride, I used 39 x 32. It was great It was easy hill climb. I was happy with today's practice ride. Going faster and stronger.

Bike rides to Antipolo via Teresa
Wheels of Happiness
I have done several bike rides to Antipolo via Teresa. With my hill climber bike, it looks like a cinch now. I do the climbs using 44 x 17 or 19. It is spinning more or less with plenty of developing pedalling rate and aerobic capacity. I do not stand and stay seated during the climb The idea is not to speed up but finish the climb maintaining the rpm as much as possible.
I find it easier to do the climbs. I see out the outer lane, to lessen the effort. There is less panting and grunting as I use my hill climber. Surprisingly, the climb takes less than 30 minutes. It used to be more than that

My bike ride today Antipolo City and diversion at Cardona
Wheels of Happiness
Today I rode to Antipolo. I followed the advice that on some days, you have to stay seated while riding up. That is what I did. I did not stand. On some days, you have to practice standing up.
Then, after joining the Recyclists at Simple's Lugawan, I went to diversion to practice anaerobic riding. One does not really get to master a hill (especially a steep hill) I stayed seated.
Advice when seated: pedal forward instead of downward, pull up too, use the core muscles too (back glutes and abs) instead of just quads and leg muscles to climb. Stay low. So that is how fixie riders climb the hills.
I hope these little rides prepare me for Sagada. It is going to be tough I guess when we are at Sagada, or from Sagada to Halsema.

Hill Climbs this week
Wheels of Happiness
Rizal Philippines May 16, 2015
As we prepare for the Sagada ride, we need to hone up our hill climbing skills.
Last Tuesday, after missing a ride the entire week, I rode to Morong (up to the market only) and did a hill climb via the diversion in Cardona. This was the third climb in a month and as it was still early and cool, the climb was not very difficult. I did the climb in 34 x 23 with still plenty to spare.
Earlier at Callahan, on the way to Morong I overtook a 26 wheeler lorry, chugging up the hill. I stood up and attacked. The lorry overtook me at Morong all ready.
Last Thursday, I climbed Antipolo. Going up Tower Hills and until fibertex, I climbed 53 x 23, and occasionally 53 x 25.
I dropped to 34 at Beverly but 34 x 19
Over all, I could see over all improvement in my ride.
At Antipolo church, a 60 year old guy who rode an MC inquired about my age, and when I replied I am almost 64 (by June) he was quite surprised. He too rides the MTB to maintain good health

I saw Choco2 extreme practice of attacking hills at #Eastridge
Wheels of Happiness
Angono, Rizal Philippines October 4, 2014
This morning our office staff and I had PE at Eastridge. Lo and behold, there were two very young roadies who climbed near the guardhouse of Eastridge riding road bike with gears of 39 x25. One of them was Choco2. Wow.
They even proceeded to Thunderbird. I could only reach Unamonte.
Keep this up Choco2

Bike ride to Cabrera Road (Hilltop) yesterday August 19, 2014
Wheels of Happiness
Rizal Philippines | August 20 2014
I rode to Cabrera Road (Tikling going to Hilltop) yesterday. It was a holiday because it was foundation day of our town I have not biked for the last 3 weeks and I thought I would not be able to climb the steep hill. A truck lost its brakes and plowed into vehicles at the Manila East Road at the said road. I was looking for a building and unfortunately, distracted by the effort of hill climb, was not able to located this.
Jeff saw me and asked how come I was at that place.
I am surprised that I was able to negotiate the climb easily. I used 34 x 25 and very easily I reached Zuri. (3 hills summit later before descending and one final ascent going to Lores)
Later during the day, I told the people whom I met, that earlier in the morning, I climbed the Tikling road and they remarked I must be strong.
Maybe

Great places to practice hill climbing - new one at Green Ridge
Biking and health
There are all ready 3 places where one can practice hill climbing: Concrete Aggregates, San Carlos Heights, and Botong Francisco.
Add another one: Green Ridge. I hope the guard will let us through.
The return ride from Stratford is challenging. I had to stand up.
