This looked like a formidable project before. I watched a video and it looked so simple and cheap.
First of all why go one by?
1. Its a trend;
2. The bike looks simpler and less complex; you remove the left shifter and cable and 2 to 3 chain rings
3. You lighten your bike by 300 to 600 grams which is substantial
Steps:
1. Remove your crankset from your bike. Be sure it has 104 BCD (bolt circle diameter - distance from one hole for the bolts to another center to center) Most of the stock crankset has 104 bcd
2. Buy a lightweight chain wheel, big small (narrow wide) They come in various color.
They come in various sizes: 38, 36, 34, 32, and 30. Which gearing fits you best. (I would go for the 34 or 36 the lower chain ring on the road bike)
3. Remove the 3 chain ring 42, 32 24
4. Install the new chainring using the old bolt, installing a a thick lock washer, wideing it a a little bit, or a thinner bolt and nut.
If you have 42, 46, or 51 gear set all ready installed, you are ready to go The chain may be all ready in correct length.
