Remco Evenopoel, 3rd at GC, best young rider, a TT champ abandons TDF at 14th stage

Wheels of Happiness

This is contrary to champion credo to never ever quit.   But he quit at the 14th stage of TDF, lagging at the end of the peloton.

Perhaps it was his debacle at the 13th stage TT where Jonas overtook him at the finish line.  Wishing our idol and champ all the BEST.

How to ride faster: make your ride a collection of sprints x 10 seconds

Read also 10 tips towards becoming a fitter faster biker

Like the searchers for fountain of  youth, many of elderly riders search for ways on how we can ride faster.
After minding the equipment:  the bike, the tires, the jersey, the helmet, the nutrition, it is time to pay attention on how we ride.

I happened to read page 162 of the Cycling + Magazine with title FASTER FITNESS  that lists 5 ways on how to improve your time in TT rides.   The 4 others prescribe use of a trainer, hill climbs.  But what caught my attention and easy to remember is this:

     PEAK PRACTICE.

Warm up 15 minutes and 5 x 15 seconds sprint

Work out  3 sets) x (6 x10 sec  maximum power) 2 minutes rest between interval 5 minutes rest
between sets.  This is an all out maximum effort.  Pukpukan   You have to do this even on a hill...
      or you feel tired...

      Cool down 15 minutes..

Doing this consumes the whole time  it takes to ride from Angono to Morong.

What I found out:

1.   It leaves your breathless and you sweat out plenty after the 3 sets;

2.  The km come by faster;

3.  It makes you faster without feeling much pain.   And you dont notice it you get faster.  No need to worry about FTP

Of course to ride faster and better you have mind other things:

1.  Equipment:      lighter aero bikes,   aero wheelset,   tires with less rolling resistance, lesser watts the better
This means more investment (more PHP)  Aero seat post, seat, handle bar. Removing stuff that make
bike heavier or create drag:   like spare tube at the back of aero seat post;  two water bottles (make the
bike heavier and create more drag)   Bar tape on aero cockpit

     Go for lighter bar tape.

2.  Posture:   the more your torso is parallel to the top tube, the better.  And the narrower you are, the
better. Hence go for narrower handle bar.  Try 38 (which is 40 at the drop) or  40 (which is 42 at the
     drop.

Hence slam your stem and your seat.  It can save you a lot watts in terms of drag.

3. Diet and nutritious.

More carbs in your  diet.   Or even fast at times

4.  More rides and practice

A biker who rides 3x a week will do better and be stronger than a weekend warrior

Chasing your kapadyak is a high adrenaline, high intensity job

I finally caught up the tropa at Pagsanjan after riding hard for nearly
                                    4 hours, and 70 km

Yesterday, I gave chase to fellow Recyclists who have left me for Lucban Quezon Ride.  They left me at 5:45, when I just woke up   I arrived at the assembly area at 6:05 and the SG there informed me of the 5:45 departure.  From thereon I was on TT mode.  I was probably doing 30 kph or more.

At Pisong Kape, the informants told me that my katropas left 10 minutes ago.  I had closed the gap by 10 minutes.  At km 66 + before 67 I saw Jimmy and the Defender and there I thought I caught up with the group.  I went ahead to have some food at Manangs at the summit (km 69) I saw the Defender pass by.  And from thereon another chase, TT until I reacched Pakil by 9:00 am and was in  Pagsanjan at 9:50.

In a chase mode, I was on TT and the pedals seemed light and it was all green go go.  No time to look at scenery and even change gears.  At Kalayaan, I did not realize that I rode that hill at 53 x 19.  (I normally do 39 x 25 for that portion)  It was pure adrenaline at work.   No time even for a drink or jingle.

Hahaha that is the kind of work they give to the newbies water boy (mules) who bring water to their companions in the a race.  It could make you work harder and run faster

My bike ride today January 16, 2015

Wheels of Happiness

Rizal Philippines   |  January 16, 2015

I rode today despite very cold morning air.  I wore a lightweight  Specialized Jacket given to me by my sister in US about 5 years ago.  However in Cardona I was all ready perspiring.

Encounter with other bikers.

Some MTBs passed me in Pantok, however I tried to catch up with them.  I caught up with them at Calumpang road and of course they were no match for the small cogs of roadies.

Then just before Lagundi (it was supposed to be a RR (rest and recovery day) however, I was teased into biking faster than I was supposed to)  I passed two bikers with GHillls jersey.   I promptly passed them.  They had TT gear and maybe they were for a show.  They tried to pass me at km 54, however I dropped them again.   Other groups of riders, mostly MTBs were also passed in a similar manner.

On the way back, I tried to catch up with a rider in Saxo jersey from Teresa who looks like he is competitive rider.  I understand his surname is Pineda.  Going up to  TAnay and Baras Hills and even downhill, I was ahead, however at the flat, near km 51 he overtook me and tried to catch up with Mr. Fixie.  (the elderly rider who rides a 52 x 14 fixie bike)
