Deore triplet crank
Sora rear long cage roller, and STX ten speed 11 x 36
Rear view of the finished project
Ever since we came from Benguet, Mt Province, and Sagada where we quit some of the stages, I vowed that we would return with a bike with gears suited to the grade. MTB only will do.
So I upgraded/converted my SARS bike to be my hill climber:
Here are the mods:
1. Removed the FSA 53 x 39 crank and replaced it with Deore triplet with 175 mm arm, 44 32, 22
2. Outfitted a 3 way SORA sti, removed the front left Ultegra 2 way STI
3. Replaced the ultegra rear roller with a Sora long cage rear roller
4. Replaced the 105 ten speed 12x 28 sprocket with 11 x 36 sprocket.
Teeth number: 11 13 15 17 19 21 24 26 32 36. It was a dream come true to have this low low gearing. I chose the STX which were lighter, silver coated over the much cheaper black coated heavier Alivio
The whole project cost me P7,800:
STI - P5,000
Sora rear roller 800
STX cogs 1,700
The gear inches and equivalent
44 chain ring 50 53
11 110
12 112 119
13 93 103 110
14 96 100
15 79 90 95
17 69 79 82
18
19 62 71 73.9
21 57 64 66.9
23 58.7 61
24 49
25 54 56.7
26 45
27
28 48.2 50.1
32 37
36 32
For the low gear 2nd chain ring
34 39
21 48 55
23 43 50
25 39 45
28 36.7 40
As you can see, for this cogs, 44 x 11 to 36, all the gears even of 50 x34 for the lowest chain ring, the lowest is 36.7 is available at only the first chain ring of 44 at sprocket with 32 teeth
I found out this am when I climbed Antipolo. I was only at 44 x 26 for 45 gear inches. (that was at Beverly equivalent of 34 x 23. At Cardona Diversion, I used 44 x 26 also. I shifted to 44 x 32 before the crest because it was tough. But take note, I ONLY USED THE FIRST CHAIN RING THE 44.
