Given the chance and the opportunity which of your bike parts would you upgrade

Wheels of Happiness

Rizal Philippines
6.29.2021

You have some money and you are confronted with a decision:  which would be your priority?

1.  Group set
2.  Wheel set
3.  or the fork

The weight of your bike is now may be 11 kgs.  and these are the grams that can be shaved:

1.  Fork  from 2.4 kg to only      .600 grams                                           1,800 grams

2.  Wheelset        hubs -             front                      100 grams
                                                   rear                       100 grams
                            spokes             4 x2 x 10 grams    80 grams
                            rims               100 x 2                  200 grams

                           tires          300  x 2                        600 grams

                                              Total                                                             1080 grams

                                              GT                                                               2,880  grams =  6.3 lbs

Thats a lot .  Less back pain

Kapadyak suggest the wheelset should be given attention because of the rotating mass.  As in the drive train:    chain, crank, the cogs should be given first priority because thats were you apply the pedalling force.

Will you have this bracelet? Made from Mavic spoke

Ernie, who joined us at the June 23, 2013 ride to Pansol showed us this bracelet. It is made from twisted Mavic spokes,  nice isnt it?  He has given several to some Recylists all ready especially to VM.  It costs P100.00 if you want to acquire one.

I Reconverted my Rear Wheel from 24 Spokes to 36 again!

Bike and Save the Earth

Three years ago, when the craze was for fewer spokes original wheels, many who are not so moneyed became copy cats (I was one of them) and tried to convert the 36 spokes wheel to 18.

However I encountered a lot of broken spokes every time especially on rear wheels.  I beefed up the wheels to 24 spokes.  Still more broken spokes every time, especially on long rides.

So today, to end the headaches associated with broken spokes,  I had the mechanic bring back the rear wheel to 36.  It cost me PHP 360, almost l/3 the cost of the wheel set.  But then again, I would save about Php l00 every time the spoke breaks, and the inconvenience during the ride.

And I feel more confident riding the bike with this reconfigured wheelset.  I do not have to worry when would the spokes break and affect my riding,.
