Those car bike, MC accidents of loss of bike lanes pour cold water in cyclists enthusiasm, make them afraid

Wheels of Happiness

The publication of many pictures of accidents involving bikes and motor vehcles sow fear into the hearts of cyclists. Furthermore, the safety that used to be provided by bike lanes is gone;  most of them have become sharrows.  (Shared ROWs)

Even pros die from motor vehicle accidents.  And there are deaths in MV accidents where the passengers are protected by metals, how much more if it is between an all metal MV and a biker?  That is fear inspiring.

Ride safe friends, kapadyaks.

Investing in good braking system

Wheels of Happiness

Rizal Philippines
7.12.2021

While a famous TDF champion said that "when you brake you do not win" it does not mean we should
be able to brake safely

In Mahabang Parang, a rider overshot the dog leg and nearly fell into the ravine (and died probably)

In Tanay, a container van lost brakes hit several motorists and caused several posts to fall

I noticed that in a cycling group, the members do not mind if they bike and have defective or non functioning brakes.  They will invest in something that will beautify them, but not in brakes.

Every rider must think of his/her safety above all others  and therefore must mind his/her brakes

Near misses lately - encounter with fellow MTB riders and motorized tricycles

Wheels of Happiness

Rizal Philippines
5.25.2021

I had two near misses lately.   One was yesterday.   A fully loaded tricycle from nearby town just darted out from his parking on the sidewalk.  He did not bother to look to the left, nor listened (as we were taught in the elementary)   I had to do an exit maneuver - sudden brake and swerving to the left to avoid a collision.

Then last week, an MTB overtook me from the right, while I was about to make a right turn.  We were mm away from a collision

A motorized tricycle with no plate number overtook me (from the left)  However it was very close and he did this several times with other vehicles.

This post keeps encountering vehicles overtaking from the right, then suddenly cutting in from the  right to my surprise.  I taught overtaking from the right is illegal.   Many illiterate drivers roaming the streets.

We continue to pray to the Lord to keep us from harm and accidents.

Why do motorists harm bikers?

Wheels of Happiness

Rizal Philippines
3.31.2021

This post is haunted by a video of a car bumping a biker (MTB) , the biker and his bike fell down and  fortunately the biker fell of the line of the car, and the car ran over the bike, and did not stop.  How could he have done that?

This post has ranted over cars who are from Pinipinahan tribe;  that is all ready dangerous.

But running over a bike (and probably a biker) that is murderous.

And we are called a Christian nation.

1127 deaths from bicycle accidents

The article reports that in 2005 to 2013, there were 1127 deaths arising from accidents involving bicycles compared to only 366 involving 4 wheeled or more vehicles.  This is 3x  more

I have long wanted to write on this to collate my experience on the said topic:  perils of biking and how they can be motivated.  It always escapes my attention until yesterday when a twenty foot container plowed into several people killing four in Taytay Rizal. Another post at facebook showed a donation campaign for a biker who met an accident in Antipolo:   he broke his jaw when his brake locked which caused his fall. He needed jaw reconstruction which cost a lot of money.

Many of us would dismiss or shrug off the dangers and just be careful;   when we have to go we  go.  And we would like to go with our boots on (cleats on) rather than wait for our time on the rocking chair.

I would like to list down classifications of causes/sources of dangers from biking:

I hope nobody gets hurt as they use the bike routes for their race tracks

Wheels of Happiness

Rizal Philippines  | January 12, 2015

A big roaring bike at high speeds is dangerous

Let us pray to the Almighty that these behemoths do not and will not hurt our riding brethren as they use the bike routes we use at supersonic speeds.  They buzz us inches away at speeds of over 100 kph with deafening sounds, banking dangerously as they negotiate curves.  If they crash, they will come hurtling vs us as deadly missile projectile.

Sometimes they eat our lanes as we meet them, and it a bit surprising especially if they do it on roads with double yellow lines markers.

Maybe it is safer if they set up their own race tracks where they can hurt themselves only or each other.  The leg powered bikes and MTB are no match for the velocity, the speed, the impact of their big bikes.

Is it surprising that two days ago I heard stories near the emergency room of a provincial hospital (I live near the hospital) that two riding in tandem died in an MC accident.

#Closeshave with #accidents last Sunday ride, November 23, 2014

Wheels of Happiness

Rizal Philippines   |  November 27, 2014

I had close shave with accidents last Sunday.

1,  The first one was near km 63 marker, about 200 meters away.  I was focussed in making circles with my pedalling as I was riding up Bugarin that I failed to notice that the tricycle in front of me stalled. I was looking down.  I had barely 3 meters before I took evasive action.  It was close.  I nearly clipped the tricycle

Overtaking when Riding in Tandem could be dangerous

Wheels of Happiness

Rizal  Philippines   | September 23, 2014

I have heard two accidents with riding in tandem coupes which resulted in the deaths of riders:   one in Muzon last week.  The riders overtook a truck and were surprised by incoming vehicle and were dragged several meters by the vehicle that struck them;  then other was in Lipa City yesterday.  The couple, about to be married overtook a vehicle, lost control, and struck a post.  The lady companion died on the spot, while the driver died in the hospital.

Overtaking RIT could be dangerous:

1.  The power to weight ratio has changed and the MC could not do the overtaking safely (unless you have a 400 cc big bike)

2.  The balance of the bike is altered and thus it is easy to lose control.

So Mayor Ben Abalos was right in banning RIT in Mandaluyong.  It is for safety purposes.  (Some are complaining that it is a violation of constitutional rights. - Do you wish you were alive with out your constitutional rights

We need more safe riding habits from motorbikers

Wheels of Happiness

Angono, Rizal Philippines  |  September 22, 2014

We nearly met some serious accident yesterday at Paete on the way back from Caliraya.   A tricycle darted from the side street. Val and I were on full speed probably doing 30.  That action made us do some evasive action;  however, two single at full speed also did a counterflow.  So after the evasive maneuver, we had to swerve back to the innermost part of the lane to avoid a collision.

The lack of safety mindset among motorbikers represent a challenge to road bikers.  A number have died from head on collision with motorbikes who occupied the opposite lane in a zigzag or ordinary road.   Heard:   in Muzon last week two RIT motorbikers died after a head on collision dragged and killed them.

Last Wednesday, a motorbiker, with his wife cut me in San Juan Binangonan Rizal, Then overtook the jeep, then cut the jeepney to turn right to San Juan.  It looked very annoying if not stupid maneuver to me.

Please always bring and wear your helmets lest we lose our heads

Real Cyclists
No, the headband can not be a sub for helmet

We often see that survival rates of those who ride motorcycles and bikes increase when wearing helmets.  Most serious injuries in rides are the head.  Experts say that survivability in accidents in rides increase by 70% when wearing helmets.

So please do not forget to bring and wear your helmets when we ride, lest we lose our heads.

One of our riders yesterday forgot; so he had cramps

Choco choco and Master e are now ok; back to the harness

Real Cyclists

Morong, Rizal, PHL   March 24, 2013

Choco2 and Master E are now ok.  Remember that Choco2 figured in a head on collision about a month ago and was badly injured.  He had to stay in the hospital for almost 4 days.  On the other hand Master e broke his shoes, his rear roller  for the derailleur about two weeks ago.   He injured his knees when he fell.  He and his bike are OK.

Choco used another bike;  his old bike was totalled.

Master e sports a new haircut

Hmm... there are now speculations as to whom Master E talked to in the vehicle

Many serious accidents at Techno Park?

Real Cyclists

Pete Francisco is Ok now;  he broke his arm in TP last August 2012

I have avoided being/biking at Technopark.  It seems to be that many of serious accidents happen at Technopark:

Mr. Zacarias broke his leg there;

Bayabas (Rene de Leon)  broke his ankle there:

Peter Francisco, a  65 senior cyclist broke his right arm when a motorcyle slammed at him on a practice run;

and there a lot more who met accidents there.

Is this observation correct?
