Luis vs Luis for our Caliraya ride

Last week, Pres Luis announced that we will ride yesterday September 14, 2014 to Caliraya via Cavinti.  Yesterday, typhoon Luis poured torrential rains early morning, preventing us from the ride.  That was Luis vs Luis ha haha.

So I tried to venture out when the skies cleared.  But very soon the skies darkened again.  And rain started to fall again.  So much for mans power overcoming nature.

I had some of the interior tubes vulcanized too.  Having vulcanizing shops do the repairs is more durable than the dry type of patches.

I spent the first half of the day cleaning the bike.  There was so much grime on my GTS. The derailleur required intensive cleaning.  I had to dismantle and clean the bottom bracket too which had been squeaking.  There was a lot dirt

By next week, September 21, rain rain go away.  What will be the name of the next typhoon anyway?

While resting at Antipolo, Joel told me that I am not being left very much behind thanks to the Fuji bike that I am using now.  Of course, Joel is motivating me.  He said I am now just one or two minutes behind the Teresa climb.

Well early in the morning, i was leading in the ride until Callahan.  They left me  and I found out that when I arrived at Simples Lugawan, they were just about to park their bike...

There are guys who leave me before that are trailing me now.... Sorry guys....

Our final tune up ride to Baguio will be tomorrow, January 12, 2013 will be to Caliraya, Laguna.  This was announced in FB and text today by Pre Luis.  Assembly will be at 530 at Sacred Heart Parish Church in Tayuman, Binangonan, Rizal and take off at 6:00 am.

The choices before were:   Jalajala, Tagaytay and Majayjay.  Caliraya is as far as Tagaytay but more challenging.  Majayjay will be challenging but may injure or exhaust our riders.

The ride will combine distance (just like the Sierra Madre ride) and difficulty:  three hill climbs:  Bugarin, Kalayaan and Caliraya.  Caliraya will be a 9 km lung busting, uphill climb.  It is just like negotiating the final leg of Kennon Road from the Lions head.

This will be challenging  and will really toughen up the Recyclists riders.

What to Do When you Chain Jump on the Gears?

As we were climbing Caliraya, the chain  of Angel jumped on the sprocket.  He could not concentrate on his climb.  I told him to adjust his barrel adjuster by l/2 turn.  I thought he knew where it was.  He said he did he turned it but his chain continued to jump on the sprocket.  As an excuse to rest, I went down my bike and adjusted his barrel adjuster.  The jumping stopped.

So I asked him, how does he store his bike after a ride.  He said, the chain is on the largest, and the sprocket likewise is on the largest gear.

I told him to rest all the cables by putting the shift on the smallest chainwheel in front and sprocket at the back.  If the cables are taught because they are on the largest ring or sprocket, the cable will stretch and the gears change will be missed.   Please take note of this helpful tip so you do not make frequent trips to the mechanic.

The Japanese Memorial Garden in Caliraya, Sept l8, 20ll Ride

The main part of the ride was the tour of Japanese War Memorial Garden.  It consist of ll hectares and they charge Pl0.00 per pax.  It was built in the l970s by the Japanese government to commemorate the Japanese soldiers who died at the place during the war.  The main memorial is made up of marble and located at the elevated portion of the garden. (I think we know this one)  The remains of famous Gen Yamashita is said to be interred here.
