Our bike ride yesterday, September 6, 2015

Wheels of Happiness

September 7, 2015

It was my second ride for the week.  The other one was to Antipolo via Morong and Teresa.  I met the other riders:   Ado and Vhen at Calumpang diversion.  Vhen had a flat tire and said he was with the group that included Richard, Pangskie, Jess.  So I waited for them.  We were together until boundary of Cardona and Morong but then, Ado overtook me.  And Vhen did likewise when we were near the market place.

Well I arrived some seconds later at Maybancal.  Over there were Ernie, Tito Fabay, Erning Mariposa, Master, Gerry Y, Nolite, Pres Luis,Pangskie, Richard, and then of course, Ado and Vhen.  They said we were going to Punta Jalajala (that would be 100 km out and back from Angono)

And so after having the Lugaw, I started out following Nolite.   As I reached Pisong Kape, I went on to Jalajala.   On the way to Punta, Weng and Erning and I was surprised when Weng touched my arm past Jalajala town proper.  That was about 10 am.. They went on probably to do the Jalajala loop but I stopped hoping to see the others come.  They did not.

At 1030, I went back and was at Pisong Kape by 12:00.  I arrived home 1:30.   It was a satisfying ride because I was strarting to develop my aerobic capacity and leg speed for spinning

VM now likes spinning on hill climbs; how about you? Which is a better technique?

VM prefers the Alberto Contador (or LA) style of climbing.  They use low gear and spin a lot. I see Joel and Val employ this technique.  They do this so that the legs do not tire easily with heavy gears.  VM said he did the Mambog climb at 28 kmh doing spinning.  And the Bugarin ride, back and forth was done quickly doing only spinning.

Long legged giant like Ullrich prefer heavy gears.  Some cycling books prescribe heavier gears for long climb because they say it is more efficient and less tiring?

Which do you prefer?

Am I getting stronger or am having more practice ride? Or was it because I know I had short ride

Real Cyclists

I was happy with my ride yesterday because I was not left alone by the peloton.  From the moment we left the Sacred Heart Paris, I made it a point to contact the peloton, although I was just spinning.  I was abreast up to Montevideo and up to Cardona.

When we were in Callahan, I attacked to lead and saw no responded (huhuhu)  not knowing that the peloton's speed at that time was only l5 kph.  I was ahead until Bagombon when VM and I rode side by side.  We were probably doing 30+.  Then at Maybancal I was left behind, but I caught on until the hill at Baras/Tanay where I was just behind by some l5 meters.   I tried to chase and I left behind Ado.  At km 58, Ado left me and I gave chase to him and one of the Verchez brothers and left behind near the summit before going down to Pisong Kape.

On the way to Bugarin, I was ahead all alone up front up to Km 64 when they attacked me.  I did not realize that many were behind.  Pres Luis overtook me at Km 67, but I left behind Chieboy. I was with Ben.

Later on some riders came later:   Master, Ado, one of the Verchez bros.  I am no longer a street sweeper.

More practice needed.

How did I do in the Tagaytay ride?

Real Cyclists

Angono, Rizal  PHL  |  July 30, 2013

I am not ashamed to tell that the rest of the Recyclists wait for me.  But before they had to wait for 10 minutes or so, now, it takes 2 to 3 minutes for me to arrive (that is according to Joel)

At the C6 portion I was in the middle of the pack and even was at the front of the paceline for a while.  They overtook me at 3/4 portion of the road.

At the Bicutan to Alabang portion, I was near the front, and reliquished the advantage near the Alabang Zapote road (they were ahead by just 200 meters)

At Daang Hari, up to about 4/5ths of Daang Hari, I stayed with the lead pack.

I and master were behind at Paliparan and Greenwoods up to Silang

At Silang to Tagaytay, we (Master and I were behind) but overtook Ado at around km 48.  Ado though overtook me at km 52.  (That was near the rotonda all ready)

What did I do as we climbed?  I tried spinning which I watched at You Tube as an Alberto Contador strategy.  The climbing was much much easier and I did not feel tired.  I was able to stay close to the leaders.

How to climb steep hills?

Real Cyclists

Spinning is the key.   Use light gears so as not to tire your legs.  Use compact gears.

Which is better a compact crankset (50 x34) or 53x 39 standard.  I used both.  I used compact for a long time.  Then I shifted to standard.  This video analyze which is better.

The narrator thinks the compact is better.
