Practicing for the 1,800 Gensan Ride

Wheels of Happiness

Rizal Philippines
April 24, 2018

Mr. Vhen Apran and I practiced today by riding from Angono to Morong, Teresa, and Antipolo.  Unfortunately for me, I lost the missing link near the new Taytay Market.  I had to do a scooter like ride ie pushing off with left leg and coasting along when there is momentum.  Fortunately for Vhen, he rescued me and pushed me home from San Francisco to near M. Diaz.  Thanks Vhen

But we had great ride.  Going up between Morong and and Teresa, and Teresa and Antipolo.  I did not have to go to 32 sprocket.  Only 28 t.   We spent some time at Antipolo Church.

Ride last April 22, 2018

Four of us rode:   Reymundo Pactao, I,  Jovencio and Jaime Maravillosa.  It was supposed to be a 3j practice ride for the 1,800 km odyssey to GenSan.  The 3J are:   Jorge, Jaime, and Jovencio

Reymundo, I and Vhen were on the first part of the practice from Angono to Morong.  Since Reymundo is young I have to keep pace with him.  However, I mayabang tried to outsprint him at Callahan and Namay.  Medyo dipa lang ang distancia.

Then Jim joined us at Pisong Kape.  We were not clear as to where we were going. They changed from Jalajala to Bugarin and to Bugarin I went up.  (Di pala sa Jala jala) But they joined me later on.  Reymond was pacing at 10 to 12 kph and the two other seniors were left by about a km.  We had buko at OL and then went home.  It was pretty hot.  And this calls for early biking time to avoid the heat.

Practice ride to Jalajala despite the heavy rains

Wheels of Happiness

Rizal Philippines
January 28, 2018

I slept up to 7 pm today since 4 pm (after eating, washing the bike, minding the dirty jersey and shoes)  I must have worked hard in my ride today to Jalajala Rizal.  I got soaked up in the rain.  I defied the pundits who said it is not good to go because of the dark clouds at the East. I persisted because I had to build up the mileage for the Vigan ride.

There was no rain even at Halayhayin Pililla.  Only light shower in Quisao up to Malaya.  But it rained hard very hard in Jalajala.  I had to go on lest I get cold and have rayuma.

Some interesting stories:

1.  I overtook two young riders (formerly Argonauts pala) going up to Callahan. They overtook me  again but passed them again at the flats from Cardona Morong boundary. At Morong town proper, they counterf lowed and left me

2.  A pack of fast riders including a Nebres rider (who came from abroad and rode a MTB) overtook me, but I stuck with them for 5 km from Baras to km 57.   Haha kaya ko palang bumontot sa halimaw.

3.  In Cardona, going up to the Looc hill (past Iglesia) a pair of MTB on 1 x 11 gearset overtook me on  fast clip and I gave chase.  Overtook them (they are not supposed to be overtaken because they are on very low gears) They caught up with me again at the diversion intersection.  There I stood on the pedals and left them behind

4.  I did the trip going home on a 50 chain ring x 13 on the flats and even went up the hills on 50.  50 x 17 or 19.   Dati hindi ko kaya ang ganong hard rings.

5.  My Fuji bike was with two other Fuji bikes this morning at Simple:  Fuji Roubaix and another  one na mas mahal.   Fuji bikes are truly light.   I lifted a PInarello and it must have weighed 8 kg ++

I was not a bad aSS.  I had dirty ass from the tilamsik of the  tires.  Very wet warmer, jersey, socks and Scott shoes that failed.  The carbon sole and the upper separated and I could not uncleats, I nearly fell.

Training for Audax of Baguio Ride - practice ride to Sampaloc Daranak falls

Wheels of Happiness

Rizal Philippines
March 8, 2016

My muscle, joints, knees and hips still ache from excesses of last Sunday race. I slept soundly last night until this morning and yet I decided to have a practice ride to Sampaloc.

I stopped at KM 64 and decided to make a turn for Daranak falls which I thought was a simple ride.  But no.  It was as if I rode straight to Sampaloc and even worse than that.  There was a return route that was not unlike Majayjay.  True to the prediction of an old woman, I had to walk about 200 meters to the summit near Aurora sign.   It would not have been had I not answered a query from somebody in Innova who inquired where Daranak falls was (Naturally I had to stop.  It is difficult to restart from a middle of an incline.  I had to find spot where I could start sideways/crosswise)

I would have made 90 km distance today, plus a degree of difficulty of about 4 (out of 5)

By Friday, I would do a right turn for Jarels peak.

My bike rides practice for the week

Biking and health

Since I was out of town last week, save for ab exercises and some walking, I was not able to practice biking.  (There were Mountain bikes for hire though at El Nido and the price was stiff)

So I made for this week.  My practice rides were at Batong Buhay Aggregate Corporation (formerly CAC):   4x up to power blocks  up to Ding Roan;  and 2x until switch blade leading to Mahabang Parang (Richard saw me and said I was having secret  practice).  This was last Monday.

Last Friday, I climbed up Antipolo.  I used a 39 x 53 chain ring just like Monday.  I tried not to stand at fibertex and Beverly.

This Sunday, we did up to Morong only and went back via Teresa Antipolo.  Our group consisted of Nolite, Allan, Cataps, Tito, Joel and myself. I led first half of the climb;  Gerry and I were eventually left behind.  They chased a lady and a guy;  Joel led the chase.

I hope these practice rides prepare me for Round Laguna and make me stronger, faster.

Next week I heard, we do a round Laguna bike ride.
