The death of Cainta mtb rider calls for resolute action.  It was schocking and gory.  It did not seem to be deadly from initial footage (All accidents are)  The opening of the door of the van, and the running over were all fast.

Dooring

Thisi post have experienced being doored twice - ie you hitting the door of a vehcile being opened at speed.   One was Pantok involving a jeep that unloaded a passenger in front.   The door opened suddenly.   My speed was around 5 kph but nevertheless it hurt.   Then the other one was in Pililla.  A driver of Ranger suddenly opene his door.  My handlebar hit his door This was a little bit faster at about 20kph+  The impact tore the hood cover of the STI.  The bike wobbled and the bike veered to the opposite lane.  It was good there was no vehicle from opposite direction or from behind.  My ankles - shin bones hurt and I had to have them checked for possible fracture.  Fortunately there was none.   The driver of course, as usual scratched his head.  He was not responsible for anything........??#!

Bike lane

1.  Most bike lanes are sharrow -  shared ROW.  Most of them are marked by chevron.   It means the lane can be shared by bike, MC, MV.  Thus the bike lanes become inutile for any protection or safety of bikers.  Those in Cainta (floodway) Pasig, Antipolo are sharrows.   This post is not sure whether the bike lane at Kapitolyo is sharrow.

2.  Most bike lanes (especially sharrow) are used for parking, tricycle and jeep terminal, loading and offloading passengers

3.  Apprehendsion (NCAP) for bike lanes is spotty if enforced at all.

We pay attention to this because someone died.   Will there be action or simply a news report.

If we want transformation to GREEN and sustainable public transportation, we must hae bike lanes.  This post understands that DOT has large budget for bike lanes.  As it is this looks wasted to this post

May be biking can be better through a safer bike lane system.  

Close Encounters of the Dangerous Kind

Last week, I had dangerous close encounters with vehicles:  

1.  Going up the Beverly hills, a Montero Sports SUV whizzed by and I would swear it was by only 3 mm, and got nearly clipped, because I zig zagged as I went up.

2.  At Tayuman, a Fortunner who was trying to avoid a tricycle going to the new Binangonan Market, swerved  to the right and nearly hit me.

3.  In Darangan, the other week,  too, a Vios did not avoid me as I avoided an excavation.  The car did not avoid me and nearly hit me.

4.  Today, as I was climbing Bugarin, two vehicles, a tourist bus and also another SUV did not avoid me.  "Ginitgit ako sa damuhan."

Kailangan ingat at pasyensya sa mga mayayamang may kotse, mga bus driver na kailangang matutong igalang ang karapatan ng siklista.

Unless this happens, biking in MM as a mass transport system will find difficulty in implementation.  Maraming mabubuwis na buhay

The number of cyclists is exploding.  Many health conscious individuals maybe dislike the pollution in MM (please see blog site   Metro Manila Air Pollution Watch ) that is why they bring their bikes out of town and then ride up the favorite spots like Bugarin.  I saw a group just doing that.  I rode with them up to Pisong Kape.  They had several lady bikers with them

 Master said he was able to pull away from them at Pililla;  I slowed down at KM 58

Expensive vehicles and bike carriers:  Pajero and Fortunner

Awesome new pick ups; latest from Ford is amazing 200 hp output and 470 nm torque

I used to be a 4x4 enthusiast.  We loved outdoors and we used to be Land Rover Club of PHL.  We used Land Rover Defender,  Range Rover classic, CJ (with SD 33 underneath -  its awesome) and a host of other UV -  Frontier Eagle, SUV -  TLC, Patrol.   The Patrol and Pajero are heavy and not very suitable for hard core 4x4 (off roading)   The Frontier and  L200 have weak 4x4 components and easily breakdown.  The Ranger performance (even the Pinatubo series) used a lot of winching.

A lot has changed in engine technology;   the Range Rover Classic with a V8 engine had 150 hp output only;  the 4.6 HSE had output of 180 hp only.  Whereas, the x Trail spews out 180 hp for the 2.5 variant.

You must be amazed with the current array of pickups;  their outputs are comparable to the V8 4.6 liter engine of Range Rover.

Hi Lux 4x4 variant 2.7 liter engine - 163 hp 343 nm

Navarra 4x4 -  174 hp  403 newton meter 6spd transmission

Di Max (Isuzu) - 177 hp, 270 ft lbs torque

Chevrolet Colorado with Duramax engine and VGTI turbo (variable geometry turbo with intercooler) - 180 hp and  470 lbs.  The most powerful in its class!

Comes the Ford Wildtrak Ranger  with 3.2 liter engine -  200 hp  and 470 nm torque  priced at Pl.549 million and 6spd automatic transmission.! The 2.2 L variant has 120 hp output and 285 nm torque

Why would a biker buy these trucks?  So that he can load his bike - MTB for off road or to go biking up to Bugarin (if you live in MM and we see many bikers doing this)

Let us do something to instill safety in motorcyling

 Three lives were lost when this motorbike with three riders collided head on with a SUV last Monday dawn.  The driver had no license, no insurance, and believed to be intoxicated.  One of the fatalities was a pregnant lady?

Was there police visibility?  Are there no patrol cars?   Are policemen not paid well these days?

The recent twin accidents  which I am personally aware of, should push the private and public sectors to wake up to the growing menace of lack of safety in motorcycling.  Three young lives were snuffed out in a collision with a Isuzu trooper.  Then Choco2 was hit head on by a rider who was alleged to be high on drugs.  The accidents and deaths will continue.  Who will lift his finger?

 LTO?

The Mayor?

TMG?

The motorcycle businessmen?

The riders?

I had the following sad experience  with motorbikers:

l.  I had been overtaken by motorcycles  from right several times while riding or on cars;

2.  I had been buzzed by large bikes in Bugarin merely millimeters away; even large bikes try to overtake even if you have the lane occupied;  you just have to avoid them and give way.

3.  I nearly had a head on collision on the way from wawa evening and cursed the offender;  he was so bad to run after me and block my path;   if they die from accidents, they may have no one to blame except their bad vibes and mindsets.

4.  Several times, while crossing the pedestrian lane in front of the municipal hall, is was buzzed at the side of the road by speeding motorbikes and where angry when I had to push him away so as to avoid him hitting me on my body/torso;   motorbikes do not know the meaning of pedestrian lanes

5.  This morning  I saw a mother with 2 children without helmets, bringing her children to school.  I think riding a motorbike without a helmet is unsafe at any speed, and riding in tridem  (is there such a word?) or threesome?

        The newer bikes are lighter,more powerful,  faster and payment terms and lower price means it is easy to acquire them.  Compared to owning 4 wheeled vehicles, owning a motorbike is easy.  And it gives convenience and a lot of savings from commute.

However accidents and deaths from motorcyles are increasing in number.  And no one, no one seem to care.

I hope this post shocks some in their deep slumber and complancency
